Motor Vehicle Accident on MLK Jr. Avenue
Engine No. 3 and Rescue No. 3 arrived at the intersection, where two vehicles collided, to find a white SUV and gray sedan with moderate to severe damage, respectively. Ensuring those involved were not in need of medical attention, firefighters proceeded to spread absorbent on the road, to remove any vehicular fluids on the pavement.
Closer inspection of the scene revealed that airbags deployed, while interviews with those in the vehicle affirmed that seatbelts were worn. “Considering the damage to the vehicles, the lack of injuries can only be attributed to the use of seat belts”, said Public Information Officer, Ashley Lopez.
According to the Department of Transportation, seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and death by about half. The proper use of seatbelts can prevent an individual from being ejected from a vehicle, being thrown against other passengers, the steering wheel, or windshield. Ocala Fire Rescue recommends the use of seat belts for every trip, no matter how short. Not only is seat-belt use required by Florida law, but sets a good example for those around you, and is a safety measure that could save your life and the life of those you love, should a traffic accident occur.
