Bicycle & Pedestrian Information
In recent years, the popularity of walking and bicycling as forms of recreation, exercise or as alternative modes of transportation has steadily increased in Marion County, the State of Florida and around the nation. However, continuing development and increasing population levels have resulted in increased stress on current transportation systems and more frequent conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians and/or bicyclists.
Mindful of these trends, the Ocala/Marion County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) is committed to increasing the level of safety for pedestrians and cyclists of all ages throughout Marion County. As part of that commitment the TPO continuously works with local, state, and federal transportation, law enforcement and environmental agencies, community safety organizations, and the local school system to promote safer environments for walking and bicycling.
In June of 2004, the TPO released the final version of the Ocala/Marion County 2015 Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan Update. This document is designed to be the framework for the development and maintenance of pedestrian and bicycling facilities in Marion County for the next ten years. It identifies deficiencies, goals, key facilities, projects and existing and potential sources of capital for implementation. This document can be viewed in its entirety at the Ocala/Marion County 2015 Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan Update section below.
